Before Doctor Sleep, there was The Shining, a classic of modern American horror from the undisputed master, Stephen King.Jack Torrance’s new job at the Overlook Hotel is the perfect chance for a fresh start. As the off-season caretaker at the atmospheric old hotel, he’ll have plenty of time to spend reconnecting with his family and working on his writing. But as the harsh winter weather sets in, the idyllic location feels ever more remote . . . and more sinister. And the only one to notice the strange and terrible forces gathering around the Overlook is Danny Torrance, a uniquely gifted five-year-old.

Amazing
This book gave a complete outcome of the Shining, let’s you really see how bad the movie was produced. A book of course will always be better than the movie, but in this case the movie left out lots of Stephen Kings book, including the Ending, the Overlooks actual outside hedge animals, roque court, playground. There wasn’t a maze at all. So many changes made by the movie after reading the book made the book scarier than the movie. A must read for sure!

My all-time favorite Stephen King shocker!
I saw Stanley Kubrick’s classic movie adaptation years before I read this book, but it didn’t stop me from being very disappointed that the movie wasn’t a much more faithful adaptation. This book is a wonderfully spooky, truly terrifying ghost story, which is one of my favorite kinds of horror stories to read! Here’s a tip: Anyone looking for a faithful adaptation should check out the miniseries. With the exception of one terrible CGI-effect involving hedge animals, it’s a great movie! A warning for anyone who decides to watch it(if you can find the DVD for sale anywhere.) Watch out for the chilling scene involving hotel room 217! It’s just as terrifying onscreen as it was in the book!

A great book, from start to finish. I think Stephen King really hit the big leagues with this book. I liked both Carrie and Salem’s Lot but The Shining took King to another level and I think he would stay at the level up until It. Very different from Stanley Kubrick’s movie. I’m actually glad I saw the movie before reading the book, for if I did the opposite I think I would have hated the movie. Anyway, The Shining is a must read.

This truly is Stephen King in his prime. The story progressed beautifully and gave a great background on all characters and made us understand them all even if we couldn’t relate to their lives personally. With understanding the characters’ lives and background, you begin to attach yourself to them and maybe even root for their well-being; but it all comes crashing down terribly quickly in a deadly flourish of self-pity, hatred, confusion, terror and love. The most surprising message I can take away from this work of art regards the surprisingly awesome drive of the human spirit to fight through adversity and pain, on the greater search for peace, love and happiness. It is a relatively quick read with relatively short chapters but it does not spare any details whatsoever. I will definitely be reading this again and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a great Stephen King novel.

Better than the movie!
I decided to read this book after having already seen the movie at least twenty times. By the end, I had always felt like there were questions and uncertainties that were still left unanswered. Finally, I realized that those questions were getting in the way of my satisfaction in the end. After finally reading the book, let me tell you that it is way scarier, crazier, and textually richer in ways that the movie could never be. Frankly, there were parts that scared the hell out of me (the twins in the movie have nothing on the horrors in this). It definitely answered my questions and was so gripping I could hardly put it down. If you like the movie but are looking to turn the terror notch up, then read this book. You won't regret it.

Heeere's Johnny!
I am sorry, but I just have to say it. The whole time I read the book, I was looking forward to the old "Heeere's Johnny!" Instead, I got something entirely different. Jack Torrance turned out to be like you and me. He was simply a man with a troubled past hoping for a brighter present and future. Plus, Jack actually tried to reconnect with his family while writing his latest work of art and looking after the deserted hotel. Also, there was more to the haunted hotel than just mischievious spirits waiting around to take you by surprise. I could just picture the party from an earlier year in the life of the Overlook, not to mention those hedge animals. Man! they sure crept me out as much as they did Jack and Mr. Halloran. Maybe even more. The movie may be memorable, but I will always think of the novel when it comes to mind.

From all the Stephen King books' I've read (which is about ten or fifteen), this one in general is my personal favorite. "The Shining" consists of the elements that formulates an instant masterpiece: memorable phrases (such as the title of this review), a superb cast of characters', and mostly the imagination that went into this piece. I read this again in anticipation of the publication of Dr. Sleep. The first time I was up all night, couldn't put it down. Kenneth Burke's "suspense of information" kept me going. This time I appreciated and enjoyed the imagination and craft of it - structure, progression, and deeply drawn characters. Burke calls this "suspense of form," which gives the reader a joyful journey through a favorite story. It also helped to erase the wretched excesses of Kubrick's film from memory. Can't wait for Dr. Sleep.

The Shining
I just finished The Shining and it is the first book I've ever read from Stephen King. This book is literally perfect. Every word of every page is so well written it seems impossible. I will definitely be reading more from Stephen King! Easy 5/5!

Psychological Horror
King combines supernatural elements with psychology to bring a family down. Masterfully done. The movie is only a shadow of the book.

Great book but not for squeamish people
I thought this book was very interesting but also spiked my interest into Stephen King's books Disclaimer: The Shining might not be for squeamish types and definitely not for younger audiences Great book overall though, look forward to other books by Stephen King! :)

Vivid and beautiful
The language is unbelievable, and the voice is so strong you don't just identify with the characters, you feel them and are part of the family. It makes it that much harder to accept the events. Couldn't put it down!

AMAZING! A must read!
So I saw the movie for the first time about a month ago and was like, "WOW. I have to read the book now!" So I read the book and was not disappointed. The movie left so much out. This is my new favorite book and Stephen King is my new favorite author. For anyone who is contemplating on whether to read this book, it is a GREAT read!

"Take Your Medicine!"
So; "Doc", if you're a fan of horror and you are looking for a new read, I highly recommend this intense nail-biter for you.

The Shining
I read this again in anticipation of the publication of Dr. Sleep. The first time I was up all night, couldn't put it down. Kenneth Burke's "suspense of information" kept me going. This time I appreciated and enjoyed the imagination and craft of it - structure, progression, and deeply drawn characters. Burke calls this "suspense of form," which gives the reader a joyful journey through a favorite story. It also helped to erase the wretched excesses of Kubrick's film from memory. Can't wait for Dr. Sleep.

The Shining
One of his best books. And as for any of the movies based on his book, this was one of the best. But in my opinion, his best book had to be "The Stand" (the long version). Can't wait to read this.
